What is an alternator?

The alternator is used to charge the battery and power electrical systems when the engine is running. If you are having an alternator issue it is likely the vehicle is experiencing major electrical problems.

Signs of an Alternator Problem

Diagnosing these issues can be very difficult without proper tools and knowledge. The issue may seem like a battery issues at first but actually turns out to be the alternator and vice versa. Look for the following as signs of an alternator issue:

1. Dim Lights

When the alternator is starting to go you may notice the headlights or dash light being dim.

2. Warning Lights

The warning light for alternator will say ALT or GEN. This light may appear when multiple electrical components are running.

3. Weak or Dead Battery

If the battery is weak or dead the alternator will no be able to bring it back to life. However, If the battery has been charged after it dies and still does not start, then you have an alternator problem.

4. Strange Smell

The alternator works together with a system of belts. These belts might smell like they are burning, indicating a possible slip on the alternator pulley. If replacing the belt does not remove the smell then your alternator should be inspected by a professional.

5. Slow Accessories

You may be experiencing electrical issues such as a windows not rolling down properly. If this is happening it’s important to avoid using the features until your alternator is fixed.
